Auto-da-fé

the public ritual in which heretics were punished by the Catholic church for not being good Catholics.  This included Jews who had been forced to convert to Catholicism  and who continued to practice Judaism in secret. After a public procession and reading of the crimes, those who did not repent were often killed by being burnt at the stake.

An auto-da-fe in the Town of San Bartolomé Otzolotepec (New Spain). 18th century, oil on canvas. Wikipedia Commons.
