Shamash

Synagogue assistant. In many early American synagogues the Shamash lived on the grounds of the synagogue complex. Along with the Hazzan, Shochet, and bath attendant, the Shamash was one of the main employees of the synagogue.  In Portuguese synagogues today, the Shamash often helps with the ritual life of the synagogue and can serve as a historian for the congregation.
