A movement that believed that Sabbatai Zevi (Hebrew: שַׁבְּתַי צְבִי ) was the Jewish messiah. Sabbatai Zevi lived from 1626-1676, and prior to 1666 he had many followers throughout Europe and the Ottoman Empire. In 1666, however, the Sultan gave him the choice of converting to Islam or dying. He choose to convert. This devastated most of his followers, most of whom realized he was not the messiah after all.
