Sometimes called the Turkish Empire. A caliphate (Islamic state) that from 1299-1923 controlled large parts of North Africa, Southeastern Europe, and Western Asia, including the Holy Land. The Ottoman Empire was home to many Separdi and Mizrachi Jews, as well as some Ashkenazi Jews who lived in Eretz Yisrael. The capital of the Ottoman Empire was Constantinople, which had a large and extremely influential Sephardic community.
