Born Duarte Lopez, Aaron changed his name after he escaped from the Portuguese Inquisition. He traveled to Newport, Rhode Island where he became an important merchant and the wealthiest person in the town. He was also an important philanthropist, and Jews like Hannah Louzada wrote to him asking for help when they fell on hard times. He was an important member of the Jeshuat Israel, later known as the Touro synagogue.
