A British colony in West Africa from which many people were abducted and forced into slavery. The first Europeans in the area were Portuguese and they built a trading post called the Castle of Elmina (Castelo de São Jorge da Mina). Here people were kept in dungeons until they were forced to board ships for the Americas.
