A Sephardic slaveowner who enslaved members of the family of Sarah Rodrigues Brandon and Isaac Lopez Brandon. Like most Jewish slave owners in Barbados, they owned only a few slaves who worked in their house and store in town. Hannah Esther’s husband Mathias ran a store. After he died, their son Moses Lopez took it over. His record book survives, and it shows that Hannah Esther and her sister-in-law Sarah bought a lot of spelling books and fiddle strings. Maybe they were running a small school? When Moses moved to New York, Hannah Esther had to rely on her other son, Isaac Lopez, who was a silversmith. Her grandson Mathias Lopez started a newspaper in the Bronx.
