Salted beef

Also known as corned beef. In order to have beef on long voyages, people would pack it in salt which would preserve it. Sometimes other spices were added. Large-grained rock salt was used. These grains were called “corns” of salt, hence the term “corned beef.” Sugar and spices were also added. Kosher salted beef was shipped from one community to another in the colonial world.
