Although today smallpox can be prevented by vaccines, it was a terrible disease in early America. One third of people who caught it died.  Those who lived were often covered in scars for life. A vaccines was discovered in 1796 in England, and we know that early American Jews like Joshua Moses and Sarah Rodrigues Brandon vaccinated their children for it, as Joshua Moses wrote about it in his journal.
