Suriname

A colony (now country) on the northern coast of South America. Before 1825 it had one of the largest Jewish communities in the Americas. It was also home to the first Ashkenazi synagogue in the Americas.  The Surinamese town of Jodensavanne was the first semi-autonomous Jewish community in the Americas.
